Living Waters Blog: Hope Courage Strength

Chronic pain and illness are a hidden epidemic in the church, but the BIble affirms the unfathomableness of suffering and the presence of God in the midst of everything. For those of us who live with chronic pain, we are all too often life-wearing and parched for refreshment, and His Living Waters become a source of sustenance, life, strength and hope! Don't give up - you are not alone!

Are you wondering how you’re going to get through the holidays? Do you look at others and wish that you had the same joy and excitement as them? Do you feel left out because of health limitations? The reality is that the holiday season isn’t always as joyful or easy for people who live with chronic pain or illness. We often struggle with health flare-ups, places we cannot go, things we cannot do, anxiety, depression, fear of the future, and guilt about not being all we want to be for our friends and family.

If only the miracle Jesus' birth, that we remember in this season, would also remove our pain, increase our energy, and bring back the ability to do everything that we see others doing. Instead, the holidays and all that they bring (shopping, parties, services, entertaining, traveling, cooking) tend to make pain and illness worse. So let’s talk about some ways we can survive, or even thrive, during the holidays, and how we can keep our eyes focused on the Lord:

           CLAIM THE PROMISES OF SCRIPTURE

The Bible offers so much comfort to those who are hurting, afraid, anxious, or in pain. When you feel yourself starting to spiral down or struggling in any way, focus on some of the promises in God’s Word and speak them into your own life.

Part of thriving during the holidays

is asking God for help and His shalom, the peace that passes all understanding. It is allowing His love to enfold you no matter what you are dealing with:

Psalm 23:1-2 – The Lord is my shepherd I shall not want, He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul.

Psalm 91:1-2 – He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

Psalm 121:1 – I will lift up my eyes to the hills, from where comes my help? My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven & earth.

Isaiah 49:16 – See! I have engraved you on the palms of my hands. Your walls are continually before me.

Matthew 11:28 – Come to me all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Philippians 4:8 – Whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report… meditate on these things.

1 Peter 5:7 – Cast all your anxieties on Him, because He cares for you.

QUESTION: What is one of your favorite scriptures that helps you?

SET HEALTHY BOUNDARIES & PLAN AHEAD

Decide ahead of time what you are going to do – what works for you, what is most important, what works for your family. One of the things that trigger issues with relationships at this time of the year is when we do not set healthy boundaries or realistic expectations.

Part of thriving during the holidays

is setting realistic expectations, which helps reduce the chance of dealing with destructive anger, hurtful words, and increased pain:

Know your body and your triggers.

            Respect your body and triggers

Set realistic expectations with family and friends ahead of time.

QUESTION: Do you have a difficult time setting healthy boundaries, and what would a healthy boundary look like for you?

            LEARN TO SAY NO

Saying "no" is definitely not an easy thing to do, but looking at it slightly differently may help. Saying “no” to one thing that is not realistic can potentially mean saying “yes” to something that can be just as, or even more, meaningful.

Part of thriving during the holidays

is discovering what you CAN do rather than regretting and longing for what you CAN’T:

Play a game at home instead of going shopping

Watch a movie on demand at home instead of at a movie theater

Take a family sunset walk by the beach instead of having a whole beach day

Meet with friends for coffee or lunch rather than going to big parties

Participate in, or organize, a virtual party with friends and laugh together online

QUESTION: What is one thing that you need to say “no” to this holiday season?

            ASK FOR HELP

Asking for help can be challenging, but most people are willing to chip in once they understand. Of course, that means speaking up, explaining about an invisible, or visible, disability, and that can be humbling. However, it’s definitely worth a try!

Part of thriving during the holidays

            is COMMUNICATION, and TEAMWORK:

Ask people to bring a dish or drinks to a big meal.

Ask for help cleaning up afterwards.

If it’s family or close friends then you can even ask for help with cooking!

Even if your children or grandchildren are young, get them helping with small things. That can be huge!

QUESTION: What do you need help with this holiday season, and who can you ask for that help?

            BUILD MEMORIES:

Sometimes we get so caught up in the “doing” of things that we forget to treasure the good times.

Part of thriving during the holidays

is learning to build good memories and hold on to them. The possibilities are endless and are as creative as you want:

Take pictures of those you love at home or on a scenic walk.

Have an open conversation with someone you haven’t talked to in a while.

QUESTION: What is one way that you would be able to build good memories this holiday season?

            SAY “I LOVE YOU”

Those three little words are still so important. It’s really worth taking the time to tell our loved ones that we love them!

Part of thriving during the holidays

is learning together that love doesn’t have to be expressed with big expensive gifts, creating time-consuming elaborate meals, or going places that will make you sick.

Try a small gestures that you know will make someone smile

Doing something together that they’ll enjoy

Say, “I love you” even when you feel sick, upset or angry

QUESTION: Do you have someone you need to say, “I love you” to this holiday season, and do you know how you can make them feel appreciated and loved?

REMEMBER THE REASON FOR THE SEASON

It sounds obvious saying it, but the reality is that it’s very easy to lose sight of the true focus of this season – the birth of our Messiah, Jesus. Ultimately, this time is not about how many parties or events you can go to, the presents you give, or spending countless hours (or days) shopping and cooking.

is learning to keep our eyes fixed on Him and the miracle that is Christmas. This is a time to remember:

… the incredible love God has for you – so incredible that He sent His Son, Jesus, to be your Messiah and Redeemer

… that you believe in and worship a God who has NOT forgotten you

… that God often works through the small, the humble, and the weak, as we see so obviously through the birth of His son, to poor parents, in a stable in Bethlehem

… that God’s ways are not our ways, but that He has a plan for your life and the life of your loved ones. How amazing is that?!

The author of the epic poem, Paradise Lost, felt useless when he lost his vision, contemplating taking his own life. His short poem, On His Blindness, reveals a purpose despite setbacks. Take a moment and look it up on GOOGLE. Go ahead, I'll wait!

In one of my very first posts in the Living Waters group, I described a painting in the office of one of my professors. It was of an extremely powerful Texas thunderstorm in the Hill Country. In the bottom right corner, just above the artist's signature, was a little bluebird singing its heart out from a small crevice in a sturdy rock. The rock stood firmly and adamantly. The bird and her family were safe while most everything around them was buffeted and beaten down. Yet, the bird confidently sang. The title of the painting was, Sing a New Song. Unless you were looking for it, you might miss the bird in the large painting depicting God's awesome strength and power.

Here's the conclusion I came to. When God touches your life, you are changed. You'll never be the same again. You can't go back to what you were before, not that we always want to.

David, in his psalm (33), tells of his Creator placing a "new song" in his heart. Paul, in his first letter to the Corinthians, tells us that in Christ Jesus we are a new creation, the old one has passed away.

Perhaps, instead of asking the question "why me God" we can ask "what purpose are You preparing me to accomplish"? When struck down and feeling sad and depressed, mourning the loss of our former lives, we who endure chronic illness and debilitating pain still have something awesome that the Lord can achieve in and through us. If nothing else, we can pave the way for those who come after us, so they might be helped through the difficulties we have suffered, just as those before us may have lit the path for us.

It is a new song, not the same tune but a different verse. New. Each of us have found this community in social media when we needed it. I praise God that it is here. I believe God is not finished with us, casting us aside as useless tools. He can use us to lift others up, encouraging one another, advocating for folks who cannot find their voice, learning the words to a new tune, even in realizing the clay doesn't tell the potter what to make (that's something I did frequently before this invisible debilitating illness). We are His workmanship, molded for His good purposes, to perfect and complete us in His timing (Phil 1:6). We are still useful in His hands as we make ourselves available. We are born again in Spirit, not to reenter from the womb, but to sing a new song. Even if it is only to stand at the door and wait.

The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him, Nahum 1:7
Life can be unpredictable and challenging, but faith and trust in God Can help us to overcome tragedy. We can find peace amid such turbulence. The Lord is our refuge in times of trouble, and through Him we can find peace even in the midst of the storm!

While focusing on this promise of Nahum, an Old Testament Minor Prophet, the Holy Spirit reminded me of the words of Horatio Spafford, who penned the words of a well-beloved hymn; “It is Well with My Soul.”

While crossing the Atlantic, all four of Horatio’s precious daughters perished at sea when the ship was involved in a terrible collision and sunk. Upon learning of this tragic loss, he set sail to join his wife in England. At one point during the voyage, the captain of the ship, aware of the tragedy that had struck the Spafford family, summoned Horatio to tell him that they were now passing over the spot where the shipwreck had occurred. As Horatio thought about his daughters, words of comfort and hope filled his heart and mind. He wrote them down, and they have since become the following well-beloved hymn:

Overwhelmed By The Storm

When we are overwhelmed it is easy to convince ourselves that no-one understands and that there is no hope. However, not only does our Father in Heaven hear every cry and know every thought, but in addition there are countless others who truly do “get it.” Others who go through the same storms and are all too familiar with the challenges we face.

         Overwhelmed By The Storm

One of the amazing things that has come out of living much of my life on various coastlines around the world, has been the opportunity to watch coastal storms up close. As the winds turn what was previously serene into chaos and surging waves rage around massive rocks, the scene can be both overwhelming and fascinating. How do those rocks stand firm? How does what is serene turn into such chaos and then back into beautiful serenity again?

           The Perfect Storm

In many ways this is not dissimilar to the lives of those who live with chronic pain and illness. We spend much of our time scheduling doctors’ appointments, procedures and tests. We live with undiagnosed and confusing conditions, medical staff who are often unavailable to answer questions, and insurance companies designed more for the healthy than the unhealthy. Many of us live in an almost constant state of utter weariness. When you add in pain or illness flareups, additional diagnoses to already long lists, or new challenges in society such as the current corona virus, then you have a setting for the perfect storm. Or to put it more accurately – an overwhelming and storm!

I'm know that I’m not alone in feeling like this. In the weariness that comes from fighting all the time to get effective, adequate medical care. In dealing with the isolation that comes from attempts to avoid pain flareups or additional illness due to being immunocompromised. There are so very many of us who are simply trying to hold on to hope while accepting that this is our life... at least for right now. However, I also know that we believe in and serve a God who is bigger than all of this.

           Some Amazing Promises

           A Change of Focus

When we are overwhelmed it is easy to convince ourselves that no-one understands and that there is no hope. However, not only does our Father in Heaven hear every cry and know every thought, but in addition there are countless others who truly do “get it.” Others who go through the same storms and are all too familiar with the challenges we face. Being honest with others in our lives can help bring us closer to them. Sharing our burdens can not only bring a sense of relief and safety to us, but also help bring about growth in those around us. Even just making the choice to show kindness to someone else or reach out to a friend who is struggling can change our focus and improve our ability to make it through the day and to face tomorrow.

So, let's dig deep into our relationship with the Lord at this time and allow ourselves to lean on Him. Let's continue to encourage and be there for each other, taking turns to lift each other up as we need to. Let's remind ourselves and each other of God's promise to us: "When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you." (Isaiah 43:2) And above all, let's not forget that there is NOTHING that can separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus - "neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come." (Romans 8:38) He is always with you – you are not alone – you are not forgotten!

What is a storm that you are dealing with today that seems overwhelming? Do you feel as though you easily get overwhelmed by the storms in your life? Where do you find your strength, courage and hope?

Looking Over My Shoulder - Tripping Over My Feet

Guilt, shame, blame and regret all too often keep us looking back over our shoulders and tripping over our feet as we keep trying valiantly to move forward. We tend to wear them like treasured clothing, things that have almost become a part of us and our identity. Sadly, our pain all too often becomes who we are, and our very way of thinking starts to revolve exclusively around that.

Looking Over My Shoulder and Tripping Over My Feet

Have you ever tried to walk or run forwards while looking backwards? Maybe that sounds a little odd, but sadly it’s not too far from the truth for many of us! Today was one of those “a-ha” days that don’t come often but which are treasured. True, it started out pretty much like every other day in my life recently – achy joints, fatigue, and the super irritating sound of workmen digging up the road right outside my home. Honestly, everything that made me want to bury my head and pretend that a new day wasn’t beginning quite yet. But then I had the opportunity to talk with a pastor and look at things in a new way. A “lightbulb going off in my head” kind of way. Bearing in mind that I live with chronic migraine, the concept of a lightbulb going off in my head, or yours for that matter, probably isn’t too thrilling! However, this was one of those times that actually made me stop, think, reevaluate, and start to rechart my course.

            Guilt, Shame, Blame and Regret

The topic of the conversation was guilt, shame, blame and regret. All things that tend to keep us looking back over our shoulders and tripping over our feet as we keep trying valiantly to move forward. It made me realize that so many of us, myself included, wear these feelings like treasured clothing. Garments we can’t, or won’t, take off. Things that have almost become a part of us and our identity. Guilt, shame, blame and regret start to define who we are rather than being seen as part of a journey in an imperfect world that God can and will use for His glory no matter what. Sadly, our pain all too often becomes who we are, and our very way of thinking starts to revolve exclusively around that.

            Challenge for Today

               LET GO:

If you were to write down something that you want to let go of and lay down at your Father’s feet, what would that be? If you could write something on a rock and throw it into a stream of moving water, what would you write? Would it be shame, fear, guilt, blame, regret, unforgiveness, anger or something else? What is making you keep look back over your shoulder and stopping you from moving forward?

             WHO ARE YOU

: Then let’s take the next step, because God doesn’t only want to take our burdens, but His desire is to fill us with His Spirit and heal our souls. If you were to write down five to ten virtues or gifts that you have, what would you write and how would you explain them? Are you able to see what is positive in yourself and the spiritual gifts that the Lord has given you? Maybe you are compassionate, generous, or kind. Maybe you have a servant’s heart, the gift of discernment, or godly wisdom. Perhaps you are an encourager, a leader, or a prayer warrior! Whatever your virtues and your spiritual gifts are, the TRUTH is that God sees you, He knows you, you are infinitely precious, and your identity is found in Him. Then once you’ve made your list, try speaking it out loud as a declaration of truth and an embracing of your true identity in Him.

           Who God Sees

The TRUTH is that you are fearfully and wonderfully made! You are gifted and have an amazing purpose in God’s plan. He is not done with you and He can use everything from your past together with all that you are going through now for His glory. Maybe that is hard for you. It’s often hard for me too, even though I’m not always honest about that to myself let alone others. Most of us hold tight to things that burden and weigh us down, and yet Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)

What do you need to let go of today that is stopping you moving forward? Are you able to see the person God sees or are you still looking over your shoulder while tripping over your feet?!

My Body Appears to be Mulfunctioning!

The way I read the Word of God it's pretty obvious that God knows me inside and out - in fact, from before I was even born. He knows YOU inside and out too! Every thought, every fear, every doubt, every dream, and every hope. And yet, for some reason I've chosen to live most of my life not only trying to hide my health challenges from those around me, but also trying to 'fix' them so that God can work out His purpose in me.

My Body Appears to be Malfunctioning!

I have a malfunctioning body. There, I've said it - it's out in the open and there's no more hiding! Hiding is something I'm exceptionally good at if I'm honest. I hide how I feel, I hide my physical limitations, I hide my pain, and I definitely hide my fear at what I'm experiencing and the future. Looking out at other people who don't live with chronic pain I see them as "the normals." Probably not the most eloquent or even truthful of thoughts, since everyone is struggling with something, but to me "the normals" can live normal lives. They shop, work, socialize, worship, enjoy family time and relationships all without fear of their bodies suddenly rebelling. All without having to consider the possible ramifications of being around other people, doing too much, or being exposed to pain triggers.

You may have heard the saying, “Some people wake up feeling like a million bucks! Me? I wake up feeling like ‘insufficient funds’!” For people with chronic pain that's all too often the daily truth, and it's all too easy to compare ourselves to others who don't feel that way.

While I know in my head that we all have things to deal with on some level, it's the normality of life as I see it that I crave. And it's that longing for normality that often gets me in trouble! Maybe that's true for you too.

Trying To Fix Myself For God

The way I read the Word of God it's pretty obvious that my God knows me inside and out - in fact, from before I was even born. He knows YOU inside and out too! Every thought, every fear, every doubt, every dream, and every hope. And yet, for some reason I've chosen to live most of my life not only trying to hide my health challenges from those around me, but also trying to 'fix' them so that God can work out His purpose in me. It was not problem for me believing firmly that God had a purpose for my life, but I also somehow thought that it was my responsibility to "fix" my health so that He would be able to move forward with that purpose. If you think that sounds kinda messed up, you'd be right - it absolutely is! The amazing thing is that our God not only has a plan for us but He also knows what we're going through. Even more so, He is actually able to use what we're going through for His glory. I actually don't need to "fix" myself on God's behalf. Now that's a thought!

             Living Wisely Within Our Limitations

Learning To Honor God In A New Way

The challenge of learning to honor God authentically, being honest and open about our limitations is not easy. However, it can be transformative in our lives. The reality is that every broken part of our lives – every challenge, every hurt and struggle – is not an obstacle to God working in our lives. Rather, it is an invitation to grow, a doorway to a greater intimacy with Him. It is a unique opportunity to walk in His purpose and serve Him just as we are, with our malfunctioning painful bodies, but hearts learning to trust Him in all things.

Do you tend to hide your health challenges, or do you find it easy to be open about them? Is it hard for you to honor God by living wisely within your limitations, and do you know those limitations? How easy or hard is it for you to accept that He knows you, He loves you, and even within your struggles He can do something amazing?

Not A Huge Fan of Lemonade!

Sometimes the greatest miracle is the miracle of a changed perspective: The ability to stand EXACTLY where you are, FACING it, without RUNNING or HIDING. It is looking for gold in the dark places and refusing to give up!

Not A Huge Fan of Lemonade!

“Lord, I don’t want to make lemonade!” I hear myself cry out to Him again and again. “I’m tired, discouraged, and afraid. I’m angry and I do NOT want to accept this for my life!” Now that’s an interesting thought! By choosing to make lemonade am I accepting the lemons? Does that mean I accept that the pain and illness are here to stay and that there is no hope? There’s a part of me that is afraid to go that way. How can I balance acceptance for what currently is and could always be with hope for the future? Is it okay to stop hammering down the doors of heaven asking for miraculous healing and instead start asking the Lord to do something with my life as it is?

           When Life Gives You Lemons

I’m sure we’re all familiar with the well-known phrase, “When life gives you lemons, learn to make lemonade.” That concept is all well and good, but honestly sometimes I just don’t want to make lemonade – all I want is my life back! Maybe you can relate to that too? Interestingly, lemons are one of my favorite fruits; give me a piece of lemon cake, a slice of lemon meringue pie, or a lemon cookie and I’ll be happy as a camper. But when it comes to my life that’s a different matter and it’s often a struggle. Seeing the lemons all around me and knowing that theoretically I should do something with them that’s useful is one thing. Actually wanting to…. well, that’s another thing altogether!

I Will Never Leave Nor Forsake You

Remember, God does not promise health, but He does promise that He has a purpose for our lives, that we are infinitely precious, and that He will always be there for us. He is our strength, our rock, our refuge. EVEN IF God doesn’t heal us physically He is still good, His purpose is perfect, and He can use everything that we go through for that purpose. As we cry out to Him in exhaustion, fear and doubt, throwing our pain and burdens at His feet, we are able to hear His still small voice saying, “I know – I hear you – I’m upholding you with my right hand and will never leave nor forsake you!”

Is your God big enough to allow for the unfathomable in your life? Do you tend to compare yourself or your life to that of others and ask, Why me? Are you willing to ask the Lord to make lemonade out of lemons today?!

Living In The Midst of the Unfathomable

Every day I have to make that choice to trust in a God whose thoughts are not my thoughts and whose ways are not my ways. Every morning I give Him my pain and doubt and feel His arms enfold me saying, "I am here and I have not forgotten you."

Living In the Midst of the Unfathomable

I don't know about you, but I have an innate need to "know." I need to know what is going on now, to know why it's happening, to know what the future holds, to know how to change things. I'm more comfortable when things are tied up into neat little packages and my world makes sense. I explore, research, question, and explore more, often exhausting myself in the process with little to show for it at the end. Hopefully I'm not the only one who struggles in this way! The challenge is trying to figure out how we can believe and trust in a God who often seems silent when we struggle. Does God hear me, and why is He allowing this pain or illness that simply doesn't seem fixable or sometimes even livable?!

God's Thoughts Are Not Our Thoughts

One of my favorite books in the bible is Job - if you haven't read it then maybe take a look and hopefully you'll see why I'm drawn to it! Job was a "righteous" man, and in the eyes of the world extremely successful, but he suddenly lost everything: his family, health, home, friends, possessions. The book of Job explores why God allows pain and suffering, and is a challenging invitation to trust in God's character. Again and again Job's friends question why he is suffering and try to blame it on him. Afterall, the concept of "karma," which apparently was alive and well even back then, focuses on CAUSE and EFFECT.

Faith Is Trusting the Rock Beneath Our Feet

The truth is that God knows all things and no matter what we are going through we are still held in the palm of His hand. Faith is not seeing where we are going and understanding, but rather it is "confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see." (Hebrews 11:1)

Faith is holding onto our God even when we are struggling and don't understand.

Faith is putting one foot in front of another when we can't necessarily see beyond that next step.

Faith is believing that God can and does use all things to His glory even when the path may not be easy.

Faith is standing in the midst of a storm and knowing that our feet still stand on a rock that cannot be moved.

Each and every day I have to make that choice to trust in a God whose thoughts are not my thoughts and whose ways are not my ways. Every morning I give Him my pain, struggles, fear and doubt. And every morning I feel His arms enfold me, hearing Him say, I am here, and I have not forgotten you.

Do you find it hard to stand in faith when you don't understand? Is it a struggle for you to continue to believe in God when there are no easy answers? How has your faith deepened through your trials?

An Invitation to Grow

Every broken part of your life, every challenge, hurt and struggle, is an invitation to grow, a doorway to a deeper relationship with the Lord.

         An Invitation to Grow

I'm fascinated by the Japanese art of Kintsugi - pieces of broken pottery that would normally be discarded are instead gathered up and then carefully and intricately put back together again. Except this time, they are put back with gold where there is brokenness, and what was once considered useless is now an item of incredible beauty and value.

           Putting Our Brokenness Back Together

How like our lives this is, and even more so for those of us who live with chronic pain and illness. The thought that our brokenness could be seen not as a defect or something to hide, but rather as an opportunity to make something more beautiful is a powerful thought. It builds upon the idea of strength in imperfection and weakness, which we see in 2 Corinthians 12:9 where Paul has been asking the Lord to take away his "thorn in the flesh," and God's answer is, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness."

           Surrendering Fully To God

Is it possible, in some way, that by accepting where I am and the things I cannot change, and by surrendering fully to God, I allow Him to work all things together for good according to His purpose? Mourning can turn into dancing, old wine skins turn into new, darkness turns into light, weakness turns to strength. (Romans 8:28)

As you hear this invitation from our Abba, what could this look like in your life and how will you respond? Will you keep your eyes on your hurt, pain and brokenness, or will you step into His loving arms and trust Him that you are unconditionally loved and of infinite value?!
